Effect of Government Intervention on the Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises in Kano State

This study focuses on the assessment of the effect of government intervention on the performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Kano State. The specific objectives were to determine the effect of tax subsidies, investigate the effect of training, and establish the effect of financing on the performance of SMEs in Kano State. The study employed a cross-sectional research design. The population of the study comprised 2,825 registered SMEs in Kano State, and the study utilized Taro Yamani’s formula to arrive at a sample size of 350. A convenience sampling technique was employed for sample size selection. Primary data was collected using a structured five-point Likert scale questionnaire. The results of the analysis revealed that tax subsidies, training, and financing each have a positive and significant effect on the performance of SMEs in Kano. The study further recommended that SME owners in Kano State should actively seek and take full advantage of tax relief programs or subsidies offered by the government, invest in consistent training programs for employees, and actively explore multiple financing sources beyond traditional bank loans, such as government grants, microfinance, and venture capital.
